The Physics of Music Frequencies
Pitch Determination:
A higher frequency results in a higher pitch, while a lower frequency produces a lower pitch (e.g., a bass drum has lower frequencies than a cymbal).
Octaves and Harmonics:
A fundamental principle in music is the octave, where doubling a frequency results in the same musical note an octave higher (e.g., A4 is 440 Hz, and A5 is 880 Hz). When a musical instrument plays a note, it produces not just the fundamental frequency, but also a series of higher frequencies at integer multiples, known as harmonics or overtones.
Timbre and Harmony:
The unique blend and amplitude of these harmonics are what give each instrument its distinctive timbre or tone quality, allowing us to differentiate a guitar from a piano playing the same note. Harmony in music is created when multiple notes (frequencies) with simple mathematical relationships are played simultaneously, producing a pleasing or consonant sound.
